Our Development

The Spinning Top Press publishing house was founded in 2012 with a clear vision: to realize literary works and creative publications with the highest craftsmanship. In the early years, we focused on fiction debuts and poetry volumes, which were well received by critics. The decision to also include non-fiction books and experimental formats in our program proved to be a turning point.

Today, the publishing house boasts over 200 published titles, including several award-winning works. Our team has grown from three to fifteen employees, and we collaborate with a network of more than fifty authors. The introduction of our own editorial series for young voices laid the foundation for sustainable support of emerging talent.

2012

Founding and First Publications

With starting capital of 15,000 euros and a small team, we began in a converted apartment. The first title, a poetry collection by Alexandra Kraft, reached a print run of 800 copies and was reviewed in several literary magazines.

2015

Program Expansion

The inclusion of non-fiction books and essay collections led to a doubling of annual new releases. A milestone was the publication of "City of Stones," which was presented at the Leipzig Book Fair and saw a second edition.

2018

Own Editorial Series

With the series "Voices of Tomorrow," we created a permanent format for emerging authors. Within three years, 18 debuts were published, three of which were nominated for the German Book Prize.

2021

Digitalization and New Formats

The introduction of a digital distribution channel and the production of audiobooks opened up new markets. Revenue increased by 40 percent, and we were able to expand our reach within the German-speaking region.

2024

Current Projects and Outlook

We are currently working on a multi-volume anthology of contemporary Austrian literature and planning to open a small event space in Vienna. Collaboration with international publishers is being expanded.

Our Profile

A Publishing House with Conviction and Craftsmanship

We are an independent book publisher based in Austria. Our work is dedicated to authors who value careful editing, thoughtful book design, and sustainable publishing support. From the first exposé to delivery, we accompany every project with editorial experience and an eye for literary quality.

01

Editorial Depth

We read, review, refine – until the text is right.

Every manuscript goes through a multi-stage editing process at our house. Our editors work closely with authors to sharpen language, structure, and style. The work's voice is always preserved.

02

Thoughtful Design

Typography and typesetting are no minor matter.

A book lives from its inner and outer form. We rely on classic typography, high-quality papers, and a restrained yet precise design. Each title receives an individual layout that supports the content.

03

Publishing on Equal Terms

Transparent contracts, fair conditions, personal contact.

We do not run mass programs. Our program includes twelve to fifteen titles annually – each book is personally supervised from start to finish. Authors are partners with us, not suppliers.

04

Distribution with Reach

From bookstores to readings – we bring books to readers.

Beyond traditional bookstores, we collaborate with libraries, literary houses, and independent bookshops. Readings, fairs, and partnerships with cultural institutions are a firm part of our publishing work.

Our Team

The people working behind the scenes to turn your ideas into printed works. Each role brings specific expertise.

Why We Make Books

We believe in the printed word as a place of encounter. Our publishing house arises from the conviction that every manuscript deserves its own voice – and that this voice must be heard, beyond algorithms and ephemerality.

Craft over Haste Every title undergoes careful editing and typesetting that prioritizes readability above all else. We work with fixed schedules, not deadlines that stifle quality.

Author at the Center Contracts are transparent, rights remain fairly distributed. We advise on the choice of format, design, and distribution channels – without pressure, but with a clear view of the market.

Design as Attitude Typography, paper, and binding are not secondary. Each book receives its own appearance that carries the content without overpowering it. Our designers work with the authors, not over them.

Impact over Reach A book should endure, not just be clicked. We measure success by whether a title is read, passed on, and cited – not by first-week sales figures. That is why we focus on slow, sustainable distribution.
